The local foundry behind the iconic BAFTA award
Most people recognise the famous BAFTA mask from the world of film, television and gaming - but few know that this iconic award is crafted right here in Braintree.
AATi Foundry, an established local manufacturer with roots dating back to 1934, is responsible for producing around 400 BAFTA awards each year. Their work combines cutting‑edge technology with traditional craftsmanship, showcasing the high level of talent and capability we have within our district.
The process begins with advanced scanning equipment and simulation software to determine the optimal casting method. From there, AATi’s in‑house pattern makers create the bespoke tooling required to produce the award’s distinctive shape.
In the foundry, air‑set sand moulds are carefully prepared before molten phosphor bronze - heated to 1,200°C - is poured. Once the metal cools, the cast is handed to the finishing team, who meticulously refine and mirror‑polish every surface until the award is ready to be presented to some of the biggest names in entertainment.
For Director Hugh Bisset, the work reflects both the company’s heritage and the strength of Braintree’s manufacturing sector.
“The production of the BAFTAs demonstrates the market’s confidence in our business to achieve the finest finish possible for cast metal products,” he says. “We have built up a particular set of skills and processes since 1934, which means we can manufacture any geometry in a broad array of finishes, always to the highest possible standard.”
It’s a story that has captured national and international media attention, with features appearing in The Independent, Washington Times, Country Life Magazine, Seattle Times, ITV News and many more outlets – shining a spotlight on the extraordinary skill found right here in our district.
